Big Country

Tonight I had two new firsts in my life. The first being that I was at my first ever live concert (I know some will find that hard to believe, but it's true), the second that I was photographing at it (at least for the first three songs)...What better place to experience this than at the legendary Barrowlands in Glasgow. The group were Big Country. Mike Peters, formerly of the group 'The Alarm', takes the role of lead singer, replacing Stuart Adamson who tragically died in 2001. I enjoyed the evening and look forward to more of the same in the future...Here are a few of the images...

Treasures in Jars of Clay...

Treasures In Jars of Clay became more than just a college project a few years ago. It has been an inspiration to me, working with all the people you see in these pages. Witnessing the joy they have for life, despite their difficulties, challenged me to live life thankful for what I have, who I have and to find joy even in the smallest of things.
This Poem sums it up perfectly:

Before you were conceived I wanted you.
Before you were born I loved you.
Before you were an hour old I would die for you,
and now I couldn't imagine my life without you.

Going, Going, Gone!

A part of the history of Motherwell was blown up today. Glencairn tower was demolished at around 12.20pm this afternoon (Sunday 20 November) to make way for new low rise accommodation. When erected in the 1960's, it was a real privilege to get a flat there which had new bathrooms, kitchens and under floor heating. Here are a few photos of it's last moments. Many thanks to Janette Tierney for giving me access to her home on the seventh floor of Albion Tower, in order to get this great vantage point...

Four Generations...

Sadly the oldest of all the generations present had been admitted to hospital and wasn't able to make it. Had a good night at the Prospect boxing event at Wishaw Sports Centre. Enjoyed the evening although it's not the easiest of sports to photograph. I had the added pleasure of meeting a 'girl' I went to School with and haven't seen in 23 years. Where has the time gone? Colin MaCrae Forest Rally 2011

I was up at 5am this morning and off to Aberfeldy for the Rally. This was a first for me as I have never shot any motorsport before, so in the pouring rain I waited patiently as each car went past, I did have to jump out the way at one point to avoid a shower of mud and stones and didn't quite succeed. I learned a lot though and will definitely be better prepared for the next time. I did leave early though as there is only so much rain one can cope with...

Children's International Games 2011

The dedication and desire of these young folks to do their best was an inspiration to watch. Wanting to win but encouraging the weaker opponents to finish was a real challenge to me. Gamu

There has been much hype about Gamu Nhengu in the months since she appeared on x-factor. Today I went through to the 'Tall Ships' event in Greenock. A bit disappointed with the actual ships, (not much happening), I got quite excited when I saw that Gamu was due to come on stage. Her voice live, is amazing and again I was very disappointed when she only sang three songs. If and when she ever goes on tour, I will definitely be one of the first in line to grab a ticket. What an amazing voice...

Then tomorrow morning, it's off to Edinburgh to photography 'swamp soccer', then in the evening I'm at the Hilton in Glasgow to photograph a special event...The life of a photographer is certainly not dull. Can't say I understood a lot of it but there was a lot of starting and stopping...Saying that. Had a great day out in Kilmarmock earlier doing a shoot with the Smith family in honour of The Smith senior's ruby wedding anniversary. Thankfully the rain held off just long enough for us to get up to Dean Castle Country Park to get some photos. Below is a pic of Brian (one of the Smith Juniors), with his wife and daughters, can't believe this is only the second time we've seen them in twelve years but it was good to catch up and get some great pics too...

Relay for Life

On Friday evening around 11pm, I went along to support my friends who were part of the Relay for Life in aid of cancer research which is an inspirational overnight event that honours cancer survivors and celebrates life. They were part of the team from Liberty Community Church in Bellshill. They have raised a magnificent total so far of £4,100, part of an overall total of £50,00 which was raised at the event. Really proud of them...

There were some who had come along in fancy dress...

but the most touching part were all the lanterns dedicated to people who were fighting, to survivors or to those who had lost their battle. It was quite emotional seeing these all placed around the edge of the track and it really struck me just how many people are fighting this horrible disease...

I've lost a few people over the years to this illness and have friends who are battling it just now. But there are two people who are very important to us as a family who are survivors and a true inspiration to us all...

Jean, my sister's mother in law and Margaret my mum. (this photo was taken at my nephew Ben's graduation from nursery. He didn't want to have his photo taken with them, so they used the next best thing....).

Brokeness & Healing

Well it's finally finished. My graded unit for HND2 Photography is ready. I've met some amazing people in the course of making this photo documentary. People who are desperately trying to make a better life for themselves, those who face a daily struggle with their addictions and numerous individuals who are trying to help those in need. It as been a real privilege to get to know them and share a little in their lives. I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did making it...

Paris - The final cut

For two weeks I had the amazing experience of spending time wandering Paris, doing nothing but taking photographs. The other great thing about this trip was that there was no one next to me saying 'have you not taken enough photos for today'. The freedom to wander, observe and capture unique moments was a real privilege. The hard part of all though was narrowing down the number of photos to a total of 14 for my Documentary unit, but I succeeded and below are the final images. The theme was Work, Rest and Play. Barren Project

As I've already mentioned in a previous post, I was looking to create four images for a college environment project. The four images I've entitled below are the final images for my submission. The titles are: Barren, Abandoned, Broken and finally A New Purpose. These are all emotions that I've experienced during my journey with infertility, finally arriving at new sense of purpose in life. Hopefully these photos convey that.

Paris

Well I've certainly done a lot of walking - my feet are screaming at me to stop but in a city as amazing and enchanting as Paris, this is not possible. Taking the time to take in all that is assaulting your eyes, with so many things fighting for attention, is not an easy task.
Elliot Erwitt said that 'The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words' - this has been the challenge! I think I am succeeding! But, I'll let you be the judge of that. Here's a little preview of what I've done so far...Enjoy!

The Invisibles...

I sat and watched Jimmy today as he silently sat with his cup in hand hoping to receive a few pennies from passers-by. Nobody looked at him, nobody put a penny in his cup. After a while I approached him, put some pennies in and asked if he would mind if I photographed him, he just nodded his head and continued to sit there in silence as the world passed him by...

Helping or Interfering?

Whilst out today to shoot some photos for my 'Barren' project, I came upon this...

I thought she was dead and decided to take a pic...as you do. It was then I noticed that her eys were following me. She was alive! I walked back to the car, put all my gear back in and went off to find the farmer. I found him and explained what I saw and where she was lying. He said he was missing a sheep. About 15 mins later he came and found her and explained what the problem was, she was pregnant with two lambs and didn't have enough strength to support the pregnancy. He even let me feel the lambs...If we hadn't found her she would have been dead within 24 hours. He then left to go and get the basket to put her in and take her home. A lot of medication will be needed to help her and the lambs survive! In a few months time I'll go back and see them and hopefully there will be a happy ending to the story....Here's the rest of the story as it unfolds...

Barren

For one of my college assignments on the environment I decided to look at landscapes and in particular 'Barren' landscapes. I wanted to make this a personal project and so the idea of 'barren' comes from my own journey with infertility. I have traveled a road that has been weathered by feelings of abandonment, disbelief, isolation and finally peace with a renewed sense of purpose. In this project I hope to portray these emotions in the landscapes I photograph. Here is a wee preview of one of the shots from today: I will be shooting these using 5x4 film but this image was taken with my digital SLR. (won't get to develop the negatives until Wednesday)...

It was a real privilege to be able to photograph Phil & Naomi on their special day. It has been a chaotic week weather wise and I was grateful just to have made it to Nothern Ireland. It snowed on Friday morning but thankfully stopped and allowed us to go outside for some photos, with the bride and bridesmaids doing extremely well and braving the sub zero temperatures. I had the joy of photographing Lily for my project, 'Treasures in Jars of Clay'. She is the most amazing little girl and made me laugh so much. Her much Jill summed her up in these words; ...People say that the lily flower is elegant and tall, that it's fragrance fills the room, that once you've come into contact with them they leave a stain, but yet speak of purity and innocence. That's our Lily...she definitely makes an impression with every expression she pulls. Her little mark that brightens a room...
